Full Biography
Taghmeda Achmat, popularly known as Midi Achmat, is a well-known South African lesbian activist. On December 10, 1998, Achmat and her partner and fellow activist Theresa Raizenberg co-founded the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC).
Taghmeda “Midi” Achmat is a Cape Coloured activist who comes from a line of Cape Malay anti-apartheid militants. Zackie Achmat, her brother, is an activist and filmmaker. Achmat met her partner Theresa Raizenberg while they were youngsters in 1986. Raizenberg met Achmat through the latter’s aunt and had previously met Achmat’s brother Zackie. Achmat and Raizenberg met through lesbian books and got involved in Cape Town’s LGBT scene.

Achmat, her brother Zackie, and Raizenberg were among of a group who co-founded the black-led Association of Bisexuals, Gays, and Lesbians (ABIGALE), which organized the Johannesburg Pride March in 1992.
Taghmeda Achmat and Zackie Achmat were both rejected by their families after coming out as gay. In addition to ABIGALE, Achmat co-founded the National Coalition of Lesbian and Gay Equality and the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival of Cape Town.
