Zackie Achmat was born in South Africa on March 21, 1962. Socially aware filmmaker and activist knew for films such as Apostles of Civilised Vice and Law and Freedom. He has been involved in the LGBT and social justice movements.
Zackie Achmat co-founded the National Coalition for Gay and Lesbian Equality in 1994, and as its director, he facilitated the prosecution of cases that led to the decriminalization of sodomy and the granting of equal status to same-sex partners in the immigration process. Based on his personal experiences, Achmat wrote a widely cited piece about sexuality in South African prisons.
