Full Biography
Solly Sachs was born in Kamai, Lithuania, in 1900 to Abraham Saks and Hannah Rivkin. His early childhood education included Hebrew and Talmud study. He and his family immigrated to South Africa in 1914 and settled in Ferreirasdorp, Johannesburg.
Solly Sachs quit school in Standard 5 to work as a shop assistant while concurrently studying for his matriculation and organizing a shop assistants’ union. Solly Sachs was a member of the Reef Shop Assistants’ Union by 1919. Solly Sachs was lured to socialism after becoming interested in politics and joining the Communist Party of South Africa in 1919 and the Communist Youth League in 1921.

Education
Solly Sachs began an engineering degree at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1924 but left to visit the Soviet Union and England before returning to study law, English, and economics.

In 1926, Solly Sachs married Rae Ginsberg and had two sons, one of whom is anti-apartheid lawyer Albie Sachs. The marriage lasted until 1942 when he married Dulcie Hartwell, with whom he had a son and a foster son before divorcing in 1951.
