Full Biography
Albert John Mvumbi Luthuli was born in 1898 at the Solusi Mission Station, a Seventh-day Adventist missionary station in the Bulawayo district of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), to John and Mtonya Luthuli. Mtonya Gumede is Albert John Mvumbi Luthuli’s mother, unfortunately, there is little information about her.
Albert John Mvumbi Luthuli’s paternal grandparents, Ntaba ka Madunjini and Titsi Mthethwa, were born in the early nineteenth century and battled against probable annexation by Shaka’s Zulu Kingdom. They were also among the earliest converts of Aldin Grout, a missionary from the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABM) based near the Umvoti River north of Durban.
