Full Biography
Oliver Mtukudzi was a Zimbabwean musician, businessman, philanthropist, human rights activist, and UNICEF Southern Africa Region Goodwill Ambassador.
Oliver Mtukudzi grew up in Highfield, a slum in Salisbury (modern-day Harare) in Southern Rhodesia. In 1977, he joined the Wagon Wheels, a band that also included Thomas Mapfumo and fellow guitarist James Chimombe. Paul Tangi Mhova Mkondo, an African nationalist and music promoter who provided money and resources to the group, provided them with this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Oliver Mtukudzi allowed them to perform at Club Mutanga (Pungwe), which was the only nightclub open to blacks under Rhodesia’s segregation policy at the time.
