Thandiswa Mazwai was born in the Eastern Cape during the Soweto Uprising of 1976. And she is a Soweto, Johannesburg, native. Her parents were anti-apartheid activists and journalists. She grew up in a house full of political debate and books. Her and her sister have a friendly rivalry. At the age of 15, Thandiswa Mazwai lost her mother, who now greatly influences her work.

Thandiswa Mazwai began her career with the band Jack-Knife. They had hits such as Fester and Chommie. These were club smashes. They gained underground recognition for members Kimon Webster, Themba Smuts, and Thandiswa. Thandiswa eventually left Jack-Knife.
