With a father who worked as a miner, four brothers, and seven sisters, Vavi was born on a Hanover, Northern Cape farm. Before his baptism, his date of birth is unknown, but some sources claim Vavi was born on 20th December 1962. He was a child laborer who sought work on nearby farms.

In 1987, Vavi was employed in the Klerksdorp and Orkney gold mining areas. While working at Vaal Reefs Mine, he joined the National Union of Mineworkers. Years after, he became the general secretary of the Congress of the South African Trade Union (COSATU), the country’s largest trade union federation.
