Miriam Makeba was born on March 4, 1932, in Johannesburg, during a period of economic distress. Miriam was 18 days old when her mother, a domestic worker, was imprisoned for six months for illegally brewing beer to help make ends meet. She grew raised in Nelspruit, where her father worked as a clerk for Shell Oil.
Miriam Makeba was the first African music artist to win a Grammy Award for her 1965 collaboration with Harry Belafonte. Makeba and Sofia Gubaidulina split the 2001 Polar Music Prize. On May 27, 2002, they collected their award from King Carl XVI Gustaf during a nationally televised ceremony in Berwaldhallen in Stockholm. Rolling Stone ranked her 53rd among “The 200 Greatest Singers of All Time” in 2023.
