In 1989, Frank Sexwale became the Legion’s first Black speaker at the Royal Commonwealth Ex-Services League Conference (formerly the BCEL) in London, England.
On this trip in 1989, Frank Sexwale also visited Hollybrook Cemetery in Southampton, England, to lay a wreath at the SS Mendi memorial. He next visited the Bembridge Museum on the Isle of Wight to see artifacts from the Mendi. He has spent his entire life advocating the memory of the men who perished on the SS Mendi.
