Cameron van der Burgh was born to Beverly van der Burgh. Cameron van der Burgh is a South African hedge fund analyst and retired competitive swimmer. He is Africa’s first home-trained world record holder and Olympic gold medalist. He is married to Nefeli Valakelis, his long-term lover.
Van der Burgh achieved his first world long-course record (27.06s) in the 50 m breaststroke quarterfinals at the South African nationals in April 2009, shaving 0.12 second off Oleg Lisogor’s previous world record set in 2002. He won the world gold in the 50 m breaststroke at the Rome championships the same year.
