Biography & Wikipedia

South African trail runner Ryan Nicholas Sandes, also known as “Hedgie,” was born on March 10, 1982, in Cape Town. He became the first contestant to win all four of the 4 Deserts events in 2010, each of which is a six to seven-day, 250-kilometer (160 mi) footrace through the Atacama Desert in Chile, the Gobi Desert in China, the Sahara Desert in Egypt, and finally Antarctica. Ryan Sandes is undoubtedly one of the best endurance racers in the world; to have won all 4 Deserts is a great accomplishment, according to Mary Gadams, founder and CEO of Racing The Planet and event organizer. Only 81 people have finished all four hikes so far. 11 participants have successfully completed all four desert trails within a single calendar year (from January 1 to December 31 of the same year), which is known as the “4 Deserts Grand Slam. “The 4 Deserts Challenge was listed as one of the ten toughest endurance events in the world by Time magazine in 2010.

Sandes finished first in 2009’s RacingThePlanet Namibia, second in the 2008 Gobi March, and first in the 2008 Jungle Ultra Marathon in Pará, Brazil, when he also set a new course record. In 2010, he established a record time for the 4Peaks Mountain Challenge.

Sandes finished the 2011 Leadville Trail 100 in 16:46:54, more over 30 minutes faster than Dylan Bowman, who came in second. After finishing third in 2011, he won the 2012 North Face 100 in Australia in a timing of 9:22:45.

Sandes lowered Russell Pasche’s previous best time for the 90K Fish River Canyon hiking trail from 10:54 to 6:57 in August 2012.

On March 1, 2014, Sandes triumphed in The North Face Transgrancanaria, the second competition of the Ultra-Trail World Series Tour. As a result of a miscommunication regarding his failure to provide the required emergency blanket from his bag at the finish, Sandes was temporarily disqualified after winning. Sandes successfully challenged the disqualification and was re-admitted as the champion.
