South African athlete Sunette Viljoen, born on October 6, 1983, has competed for her nation in both cricket and athletics. She competes in athletics as a javelin thrower and has won two gold medals at the Commonwealth Games (in 2006 and 2010) as well as silver and bronze medals in a number of other competitions. Between 2000 and 2002, she played cricket for the South African national team, including at the New Zealand World Cup in 2000.
Sunette Viljoen was born in Rustenburg, Transvaal (present-day North West). She attended Die Hool Rustenburg, and Afrikaans is her native tongue. In a One Day International (ODI) game against England in June 2000, Viljoen made her South Africa debut in international cricket. She was the youngest woman to play ODI cricket for South Africa at the time, turning 17 years and 10 days old (a record later surpassed by several women).
Sunette Viljoen was chosen for the South African team later that year to compete in the 2000 Women’s World Cup in New Zealand. She was a right-handed all-rounder who participated in all eight of her team’s games during the competition. Against England, she recorded her highest ODI score of 54 not out. In a later game, she bowled 3/27 from 10 overs against Ireland for the best bowling numbers of her international career. Viljoen’s final international matches for South Africa occurred in March 2002, in a home series against India.
