Pettersen was born in the Norwegian city of Oslo. Her parents, Axel and Mona, were both athletes. Stefan and Gunerius are her two brothers.
Pettersen went professional in September 2000, at the age of 19, and earned a Ladies European Tour card by finishing 11th at the 2001 LET Qualifying School. She played in ten events without missing a cut during her first season in 2001. Pettersen won the Open de France Dames in a playoff over Becky Morgan in her second professional start. She was voted LET Rookie of the Year after finishing second on the Order of Merit.
