Semenya was born in Ga-Masehlong, a town near Polokwane (formerly known as Pietersburg), and grew up in Fairlie, a village in South Africa’s northern Limpopo region. She is the youngest of four siblings. Semenya studied sports science at the University of North West and Nthema Secondary School. She began running as part of her preparation for association football.
