Frederik Willem de Klerk (F. W. de Klerk)  is a South African national born on March 18th, 1936, with a notable career in politics. He was South Africa’s State President from 1989 to 1994 and served as the Deputy President from 1994 to 1996. His work significantly affected the country during his years of service. He was a conservative and an economic liberal who led the National Party (NP) from 1989 to 1997 and supported and enforced apartheid.

He knew that growing ethnic hatred and violence led to a racial civil war. De Klerk negotiated with Mandela to fully dismantle apartheid and establish a transition to universal suffrage and oversaw the 1994 non-racial election in which Mandela won. He then became Deputy President of Mandela’s ANC-led coalition, but opposed the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. In 1996, he withdrew the NP from the coalition government and retired from active politics, lecturing internationally.
